What Uncoated Is
Uncoated is an informational tool designed to help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions. It does not claim any scientific or medical authority. All scores, grades, and labels represent the opinions of Uncoated based on publicly available data and a disclosed methodology — they are not statements of fact about any product's absolute safety or quality.
Uncoated scores personal care products on two axes: ingredient safety and packaging sustainability. Scores are generated by applying a fixed, publicly documented formula to data sourced from government regulatory databases and open-data repositories. These scores reflect our opinion of relative product risk based on that data.
Uncoated is not a medical, scientific, or regulatory service. Nothing in the app constitutes medical advice, health guidance, diagnosis, or treatment. Always verify ingredient information with the physical product label and consult a healthcare professional if you have allergies, sensitivities, or medical concerns.
Nature of Product Scores
Product scores are opinions derived from applying a systematic methodology to publicly available data. They are provided as a consumer information tool, not as a definitive assessment of any product's safety, efficacy, or environmental impact.
- Scores may not reflect the most current product formulation. Manufacturers may change ingredients or packaging at any time without notice.
- A low score does not mean a product is unsafe, defective, or illegal. A high score does not guarantee a product is safe for you personally.
- Risk classifications reflect what regulatory bodies have flagged based on available research. Science evolves, and so do our scores.
- Grade labels (e.g. "Worth Switching", "Room to Improve") are shorthand for score ranges — they express our opinion about relative product quality, not factual claims about safety.
Your Account
You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure. You must be 13 years of age or older to create an account. If you create an account on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you have authority to bind that organisation to these terms.
Subscriptions & Payments
Paid subscriptions are billed through Apple App Store or Google Play. All payments, refunds, and billing disputes are governed by the respective store's terms. We do not process payments directly and never see your payment details.
Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time via your device's subscription settings.
Free trial periods are available on annual plans. You will not be charged during the trial. If you cancel before the trial ends, you will not be charged.
Data Accuracy & Freshness
Product data is sourced from third-party databases and community contributions. Uncoated does not independently test or verify product formulations. We relay and organize publicly available information — we are not the original source of ingredient or packaging data.
Every product page shows a "last verified" date. When data is older than 12 months, a warning is displayed. AI-inferred data is always labeled as such. You are responsible for verifying product information with the physical label before purchase, particularly if you have allergies or sensitivities. Uncoated is not liable for decisions made based on incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate product data.
User Submissions
If you submit product corrections or photos, you grant Uncoated a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to use, reproduce, modify, and display that content to improve the app and its database. You confirm that your submission is accurate to the best of your knowledge and does not infringe any third-party rights.
We review submissions before they are applied. We may decline, modify, or remove submissions at our discretion. Approved corrections may be contributed to Open Beauty Facts under the ODbL license.
Scoring Independence
Uncoated is 100% commercially independent. Product scores are calculated using a fixed, publicly documented formula. No brand, advertiser, retailer, or third party can pay to influence a product's score. We accept no advertising, sponsorship, or brand funding. The app is funded entirely by user subscriptions. Our scoring methodology is published in-app and at uncoated.app/methodology.
Open Data Attribution
Product data is sourced in part from Open Beauty Facts, licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). This data is attributed on every product page. Corrections submitted by users may be contributed back to Open Beauty Facts in compliance with the ODbL.
Prohibited Use
You agree not to:
- Use the app to scrape, copy, or redistribute product data at scale
- Submit false or misleading product corrections
- Attempt to reverse-engineer or manipulate scoring outcomes
- Use scores or content from Uncoated to make defamatory claims about any product or brand
- Use the app in any way that violates applicable law
Disclaimer of Warranties
The app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that product data is complete, accurate, current, or error-free.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Uncoated and its officers, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, arising from your use of the app, reliance on product scores, or any purchasing decisions made based on information provided by the app.
Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising from or related to the app is limited to the total fees you paid to Uncoated in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Uncoated and its officers, employees, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorney's fees) arising from your use of the app, your user submissions, or your violation of these terms.
Dispute Resolution
If you have a dispute with Uncoated, we encourage you to contact us first at [email protected] so we can try to resolve it informally. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally shall be resolved through binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, rather than in court.
You agree that any dispute resolution will be conducted on an individual basis and not as a class, consolidated, or representative action. If this arbitration provision is found unenforceable, the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for any dispute shall be the state and federal courts located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. You consent to the personal jurisdiction of the courts located in Massachusetts for any actions not subject to arbitration.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms. If you do not agree to the updated terms, you may delete your account.
